Teacher Burnout – Understanding what it is and how to reduce the risks

October 21, 2020 @ 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm UTC+2

Teacher Burnout
Burnout has always been and remains poorly understood and even dismissed as nothing more than an excuse for laziness or poor performance. But did you know:
1. It has been thoroughly researched since the 1970s and the majority of subjects have been Teachers and Medical Practitioners.
2. It was recognised by the WHO as an “occupational phenomenon” in May 2019.
In South Africa many of our Teachers are exposed to challenging working conditions that are perfect for the development of burnout. Overlooking this impacts not only on the Teachers themselves but also on the learners who are reliant on them as both educators and role-models. It can result in poor social engagement and productivity, diminished quality of work, frustration and even outbursts of anger and increased absenteeism…not to mention the multiple medical complications associated with it. Many South African Teachers’ careers are in fact being cut short as a result of burnout.
Renowned Social Psychologist and author, Christina Maslach, defines burnout as an “Experience of exhaustion, where the individuals who suffer from it become cynical toward the value of their job, disengaged and doubt their ability to perform.”
In her upcoming webinar, “Managing Teacher Burnout” occupational therapist, Lesley Burns will be sharing valuable and insightful information that, as a member of such an integral profession in the determination of our country’s future success, you cannot miss. Lesley has over 20 years’ experience dealing with mental health matters in the workplace. In this webinar, she generously shares her knowledge and experience and addresses questions such as:
